bonfire sparkle and a Guy to remember!

A Guy to remember!

We were delighted to hear that we had won the popular Fifty for Fawkes Guy Competition at the annual Fireworks and Torchlit Procession organised by Farnham Round Table!! The Guy was a collaborative effort with the wooden base being made by the Men in Sheds Team and then decorated by students during their weekly wellbeing sessions.

The teen groups hosted at space2grow are provided as an alternative education provision, a much-welcomed support for the schools especially for students struggling with EBSNA. They work on different projects each week and in the run up to bonfire night they got very creative building the Guy from natural items found on the acre.

bonfire sparkle

We welcomed families and volunteers from across our space2grow community to our bonfire night. Keeping things simple we had a small bonfire, marshmallows and sparklers.

We also discovered that a cape brings special sparkler twirling capabilities...who knew?

young carers

We recently sent back some feedback for the Waverley Thriving Communities team to share how the Young Carers evenings were going. Children shared that the sessions made them “feel like me!!!” We also got lots of quotes from parents; “Thank you for inviting her. She has so much fun and is so excited when it's time to come again. It makes a difference to us all. I can concentrate on one child knowing the other is having fun.”

Winter reorganising

Behind the scenes the gardeners have worked at a pace this Autumn. Widening paths, reorganising beds as well planting sees and cuttings for Spring.

happy birthday to the national lottery!

On the 19th November we celebrated the national lottery birthday! Our national lottery funding is key to many things we do from the Men in Sheds team to the Garden Volunteer groups. From the space2play sessions for 2-4 year olds to the teen wellbeing sessions helping secondary school students. An enormous thankyou to the Lottery and the players!

A small reminder that Waitrose in Farnham have reintroduced their community matters green token scheme! space2grow is doing very well but we'd love a few more tokens in our box! Please add next time you are in. With the money raised we hope to do a much needed upgrade on some of our outdoor equipment.

reflections from the acre...

This week we hear from Tony, who has been a member of the Men in Sheds team since they started.

"I have been involved for 5 or 6 years, I joined when it started with Melvyn. I found out about the group through the Farnham Herald. I was looking for a group to join, I had been at a furnishing place but I was looking for a group like this. For my work, I have been involved in the timber trade for 25 years and furniture restoration for 20 years so this project allows me to still use those skills, still working.

The group is a great way to get out and meet one or two people, otherwise I'd be in my workshop by myself. I enjoy all the projects, I do whatever's going, whatever's asked of me.

It's really nice to be in these surroundings, in nature, in a garden like this. It's beautiful in the summer to sit down here and have a tea'
