fish, floods & fresh starts!

space2play rescue fish!

We've had a very wet start to the acre with the storms at the start of the year resulting in floods. Luckily the pond and sheds all remained intact and water dispersed quickly. The space2play groups found ten fish in a puddle who were stranded having been carried from the pond! They were able to rescue them and put them back.

The new term at space2play has got off to a good start with boat sailing, imaganitive food play as well as painting with ice. The ethos of the group is there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. We love seeing these brave adventurers enjoying the space through the seasons - there is always a cosy camp fire to end the sessions. Huge thank you to Waverley Thriving Communities fund for supporting these sessions.

We received some magical comments at the end of our first full term;

"Stories and cooking on the campfire are fab. Thank you so much. We are so lucky to have you and this space."

"Since coming to the sessions my child has developed so much confidence. Everyone has noticed that. That is due to you and the wonderful opportunities that you provide."

Sessions take place 9am - 11am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday during school term time. There are limited spaces available.

teen wellbeing sessions - clearing and playing

The new school term saw students from Farnham Heath End School continue their weekly sessions. The sessions, funded by Waverley Borough Council's Thriving Communities Fund, are designed to give the students time in a nature based environment, supporting their wellbeing and resilience. They contribute so much to the acre and have already cleared the old unused pizza oven as well as helping to create the new space2play mud pit. A great way to kick off the year!

And there was even time for tree climbing...

behind the scenes

The winter garden jobs are beginning to get ticked off... there have been paths woodchipped, trees pruned and compost turned. Lots of exciting projects on the horizon including a larger fruit cage. We've also been incredibly lucky to have the Men In Sheds team onsite helping to fix and repair as we give the kitchen area a revamp. All looking forward to the year ahead.

support for local families

We're delighted to share that Farnham Town Council are supporting the Talking Teens courses in 2024. As a part of their commitment to support the young people of Farnham they recognised that the courses offer parents and carers practical advice on how to help navigate this stage of their child’s development with empathy and understanding. This was featured in their annual residents guide and you can read the full guide HERE

reflections from the acre...farewell 2023

And before January draws to a close we wanted to share a video created of lovely moments throughout the year of 2023...

From small achievements such as clearing our salvage yard and creating our willow hurdle, to big events such as meeting HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to Farnham and being invited by eden communities to host a BIG Lunch with John Bishop.

Then there were the schools that visited, the new greenhouse, the growing, planting, watering and mowing. There were campovers, holiday clubs and dance displays. Judges who were hosted, the delightful news of being Squires Badshot Lea chosen charity of the year and launching space2play; our new early years initiative where the garden has become a place of creative exploration & outdoor play.

Numerous and varied projects were achieved by the Men in Sheds team from glitter balls to mud kitchens and everything in between. And all the parents who attended the parenting courses, helping so many local families.

We received support from many organisations throughout the year - a huge thanks to them all.

We said goodbye to some dear friends, hello to new faces and ended the year with bonfires and cheerio wreaths! Looking forward to the rest of 2024...
