World Mental Health Day

Another busy week full of gardening activities; the Men in Sheds team putting up a well needed shed, The Parenting Space successfully launching a new term of parenting classes and the visit of the children’s group The Beavers to the garden, the highlight of the week for us though was Thursday - World Mental Health Day.

Our sunflowers were out in force Thursday morning, a lovely touch as yellow was the chosen colour to mark the day. The day started with a visit of the children of St. Andrews School, many wearing an item of yellow, as they used the acre as part of their mindfulness activity day. They were tasked with finding ten items connected with autumn to decorate their headbands, to understand that the day was all to do with health for the head, and were soon scurrying about collecting leaves, twigs, conkers and birdseed whilst being discouraged from sticking on anything that was still crawling! It was a wonderful sight to see about 60 children having a great activity whilst learning about being in the moment and observing nature at close quarters.

Soon after their departure the acre was being set up for a lunch, again to mark World Mental Health Day, organised and run by Coral who will shortly be running our Cookery Club. The comforting aroma of soup filled the Talking Shed whilst tables displayed some stunning cakes created by Coral and her friends. The lunch was a lovely afternoon with those who attended enjoying the autumnal sunshine, and each others company, whilst raising money for a cause which is very dear to all of us at space2grow.

Finally on Thursday evening we were hosted at Squires Garden Centre for the Farnham in Bloom awards that evening. It was packed! However we had reserved seats near the front and soon we clapping along as awards were being handed out for the fantastic achievements of those who had entered the various " In Bloom" events. We all gasped audibly as Iain Lynch ( the town clerk) announced the award for " Gardener of the Year" - except this year it was " Gardeners of the Year" and we won it! It must have been quite a sight as about 14 of us went up and collected our award from Mayor Pat Evans who was beaming along with the rest of us! Just brilliant. Fantastic. Wondrous.
